With the support of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation (AHIK) and the joint organization of the Republican Committee of the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers, the Association of Sports Organizations of Azerbaijan Trade Unions, and the Student Youth Volunteer Sports Society, a chess tournament titled “Zafar” was held among higher education institutions.
The purpose of the tournament is to strengthen the student sports movement, foster mutual cooperation among higher education institutions, develop strategic thinking and teamwork skills among young people, and reinforce the spirit of national pride and patriotism on the occasion of Victory Day.
At the opening ceremony of the event held at the Baku Sports Palace, the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was played, and the memory of the martyrs was honored with a moment of silence.
Deputy Chairman of AHIK Musa Mirzayev, Head of Department at the Ministry of Science and Education Elnur Aliyev, Head of Sector at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Aydin Mammadov, and other speakers highlighted the state support for the development of sports in the country and the successful implementation of youth policy. They emphasized the importance of such events in promoting intellectual development and teamwork among young people, and wished success to all participants.
Afterwards, international arbiter Fikrat Sideifzade introduced the participants to the tournament rules, and the competition commenced. A total of 28 teams representing 14 higher education institutions, both male and female categories, took part in the tournament. The competition was held according to Rapid Chess rules under the Swiss system in seven rounds.
According to the results, among women’s teams:
• 1st place – Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University,
• 2nd place – Azerbaijan University of Languages,
• 3rd place – Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction.
Among men’s teams:
• 1st place – Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction,
• 2nd place – Baku Higher Oil School,
• 3rd place – Baku State University.
The winning teams were awarded cups, medals, honorary diplomas, and gifts.
