International Women’s Day Celebrated at the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation

An event dedicated to 8 March – International Women’s Day was held at the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation (AHIK).

The event brought together female employees of AHIK, as well as women representing its affiliated and subordinate organizations.

The ceremony commenced with the performance of the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This was followed by the screening of a video highlighting the dedication of Azerbaijani women and their significant contributions to the development and progress of society.

In his address, the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation, Sahib Mammadov, emphasized the invaluable role of Azerbaijani women in preserving national and moral values, enriching the mother tongue, and advancing literature and culture. He also underlined their determination, resilience, and spirit of compassion, which have historically played an important role in shaping Azerbaijani society.

It was noted that the foundations of state policy on women in modern Azerbaijan were established by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who implemented significant reforms aimed at increasing women’s participation in socio-political life, safeguarding their rights, and ensuring gender equality. These initiatives created broad opportunities for women’s comprehensive development and active engagement in public life.

Participants further highlighted that under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, a favorable environment has been formed in the country to encourage women’s active participation in education, science, culture, and entrepreneurship. Today, women are successfully represented in state institutions, the parliament, and numerous other sectors of public and professional life.

Particular attention was also given to the multifaceted activities and humanitarian initiatives of the First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva. It was emphasized that the projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, under her leadership, make a significant contribution to promoting Azerbaijan’s national cultural heritage and values at the international level.

The Chairman of the Confederation also stressed that the active participation of women in the trade union movement remains a constant priority. Currently, women constitute 50.4 percent of the members of Azerbaijan’s trade unions, while their representation in elected bodies exceeds 56 percent. It was further noted that AHIK consistently implements initiatives aimed at protecting women’s labor and socio-economic rights, strengthening their leadership capacities, and supporting their professional and career advancement.

In her remarks, Elnara Muradova, Chairperson of the Republican Committee of the Healthcare Workers’ Trade Union-an affiliated organization of AHIK-spoke about the legislative framework ensuring the protection of women’s rights in Azerbaijan, particularly in the fields of labor and employment. She also highlighted the growing leadership and initiative demonstrated by women within the trade union system.

AHIK volunteer Konul Mirelizade shared her experience gained within the trade union system and spoke about the mentorship support provided by her female colleagues. She emphasized that Azerbaijani women, through their professional competence and strong moral values, serve as an inspiring example for the younger generation.

As part of the event, a video featuring congratulatory messages and reflections from female employees of AHIK was also presented.

The event concluded with the presentation of gifts to the participants in recognition of their contributions and in celebration of International Women’s Day.
